Alliance to Stop I-80 Tolling is a project of the Columbia Montour Chamber of Commerce and the Williamsport/Lycoming Chamber of Commerce.
The Alliance opposes the tolling of I-80 Because:
- Tolling I-80 hurts Pennsylvania's economy. Tolling I-80 will cause business failures, drive away new businesses and result in job losses and economic decline.
- Better options exist. There are alternatives to tolling I-80 that will generate more money with less hardship.
- The tolling proposal is merely a first step on a dangerous path. Act 44 places no limit in tolling levels and no supervision by the state. Other taxes and fees will need to be created if tolling I-80 fails to generate the funds projected. Other Pennsylvania interstates, including those in metropolitan areas, could be next.
- Tolling I-80 will strain other Pennsylvania roads. Tolling I-80 will push traffic onto secondary roads resulting in increased congestion, jeopardizing public safety, and increased maintenance and repair costs.
- Tolling I-80 is fundamentally unfair. Tolling I-80, designed and operated as a toll free road, will force those travelling rural areas to pay for mass transit shortages in big cities.
- The public's voice has not been heard on tolling I-80. Act 44 was proposed without public hearings. Citizens and businesses have not been given adequate opportunity to comment on the issue. Their views have not been properly considered or other options reasonably explored.
